Nie Nie Auction: We are so blessed

I think about how hard we try to get healthy, how much work it is. And then I read about this family, a mom and dad with kids, just like me, who were in a terrible accident, and how it all changed for them in a split second.  Steph is a Mommy blogger, like me (my Mommy blog, One Day at a Time is here) I am blessed to be healthy and trying hard with my daughter. There are numerous auctions going off to raise money for the couple, and I want to join in.

I an honored to be able to offer up for bid this Dbyellow an amazing yellow Dooney and Bourke woven tote with leather trim. it is brand new, and comes with 3 cool accessories, a cosmetics case, a key fob, and i.d. case. It's retail value is $360.00 It's awesome, and the sunny yellow color is to me the color of hope! Of happiness and sunshine, prayers and love.  I love, love, love this bag- it was given to me as a gift, and I've been saving it "for special". What could be more special than this?   It has never been used- it's still in the gift bag it came in. Please open up your hearts and wallets to help out this amazing couple. You can read more about Steph and Christian HERE, on CJANE, Steph's sisters blog. More info is also on the NIE NIE diologes.

The auction will start with an opening bid of $25.00. The auction ends on my birthday- Spetember 7th! Here's how it'll work- the winner will pay via Steph and Christians paypal account, then e-mail a copy of the receipt, and I'll send the bag on it's way! Place your bids on the comment section. Thanks for looking, and hopefully bidding.

FROM ALLY:

My brother and I both gave this bag to our Mom for Mother's Day. (our Dad helped)  I really want to help out another kid's Mom.  We talked about what we could auction off- we wanted it to be special so that it would mean something to us. I will also include some 5 hand decorated notecards with envelopes that I make myself with the bag. Please help this family.

Being Healthy today

Today, we were not healthy. We went on a memory trip of my mom, the MOST unhealthy person I knew, who taught my my unhealthy lifestyle. My mom was a laundress, who ran a laundry service at a local laundromat. She took such pride in her work. She always taught me that if you were going to so something, to do it well, even laundry. It was honest work, and she did a fabulous job of it!  So, today for some strange reason we ended up by "her" Laundromat, and Aedan begged me to go inside. I normally don't, it just hurts too much, but he has a memory, you see, of his beloved Babcia there, and he wanted to see the place again. How could I say no?  So we went in, and the new attendant let him look in the closet that he remembered. AND, he did remember, one thing that was just him and his grandma.  I suddenly had a yearning for th fried chicken nuggets that I would eat over and over with my mom . and we had that for lunch. Healthy? No, not a bit, but, oh so good for the soul!  How is it that emotions make you yearn for a certain food?

Thinking about Stephanie of Nie Nie made me think a lot about my mom, how hard it was for me to lose her, and I was 34 when she died!   I hope that she makes a full recovery, very soon, for her kids.

If you can, call you mom and tell her how much you love her today. Right now.

How to get kids to eat healthy

Don't keep non-healthy foods around.

Getting healthy together isn't all that easy if you constantly have  non-healthy foods around. I have eliminated most unhealthy foods from our home, much to Dave's dismay,  Yes,it stinks at 11:30 pm, while working away n the computer, to NOT have anything to snack on (I shouldn't be snacking on anything, anyway at that time). But, I had a lesson in , hmm.. what does this mean yesterday.

At book club, we were told to bring a hearty appetizer and a dessert.  So, we brought baked chicken nuggets, and a fruit bowl.   I found myself eating the chips and dip, the bar cookies, the candy corn. All my favorites that I don't have at home anymore. It was mindless snacking. I SHOULD have put a little bit of all that yummy stuff on my plate, made a plate for Ally, and been done with it.  I'm sorry I didn't, but I guess I can see by what I didn't do, how to  do it right for next time.

We also ran into a bit of diet apathy this week. It's the last week of summer,  we're tying up loose ends, fitting in play dates, dinners, potlucks, and it's easy to fall off the healthy wagon. We are committed, tho, to leading a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy.

Tonight is a barbecue at a friends.  I've promised to make cupcakes. So, I will make cupcakes, and limit all of us to ONE cupcake, and make a healthy plate, with good portions.

This is a journey- we're both learning new things.

Catherine, Book Club and more

Yesterday, I had a Book club meeting at Olivia's house we had an Olympics in the pool. There was really good food. Chicken honey wings, cookies, pizza rolls, etc. I had some chicken nuggets and 2 pizza rolls, but I also had some fruits and veggies 1 cookie, candy corn, water and orange soda. My exercise was to swim. Later, after book club Catherine came to sleepover. All we ate was a Popsicle.  Tomorrow I'm going to go to the Palisades mall. I'm going to the best place ever... Dave And Busters. It's a HUGE arcade/restaurants. I'm also going to see the final episode of Queen Bees.

                                YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eat, Shrink and Be Merry

I was reading a blog post by Lori at My Wooden Spoon about this cool cookbook, Eat, Shrink , and Be Merry . It seems like it will have recipes to help you eat healthy, but get this-- it's REAL FOOD.  Since Ally and I are trying so hard to do the right thing, I'm thinking I want this book.   Don't you think it looks like a good read?    Oh, I hope I win a copy, but if not, I'll definitely be buying one. I keep getting stump on what to cook, and I think this'll really help.

Eathing Healthy at Rye Playland

We just spent 6 1/2 hours walking all around  Rye Playland, and I am exhausted. BUT, we did it a healthy way, and there were no tears or whines, either!

We packed a lunch (Sandwiches, fruit, popcorn, water,) and left the park and walked to the picnic area to eat.  Then around 3:30, we had our  promised ONE SNACK. Aedan had cotton candy (I asked the  girl to make it a small one) and Ally had a small ice cream.  And that was all we ate!  It may seem weird to to others, but usually when we go out to places it's about the food as much as it is about the venue.  I knew  going there that it would be difficult, if not impossible to eat healthy there.  There is Burger King, Nathans, Ranch One, pizza, Mexican, and oh, yeah, I saw a Blimpie.  I much preferred my made t home on whole wheat sandwich's, and  water that wasn't $3.oo a bottle. We concentrated on riding all the fun rides, including most of the roller coasters,  all the water rides, and as many of the Spinning rides that this 38 year old can handle.  I was proud of the kids, too  it's hard changing, and they are really trying!

The bad guy

Today, I was the family bad guy. There is a carnival in town at one of the local churches. We usually go every year, but this year I said we couldn't go. We normally go there to eat dinner, and it's typical carnival food, not a healthy thing in the place, plus cotton candy, ice cream,  pizza fritte, all kinds of JUNK.  I told my kids that we would skip the carnival, but go to our local amusement park on day next week.  I can bring my own healthy lunch (or dinner) and they can have a treat- but no need to fill up on crap!  Plus, we can walk around th whole park, and there is a special- buy one get onewristband for all you can ride for 6 hours.

The kids were OK with it. Dave moped. Too bad. :)

We've been making our own frozen yogurt. It's really easy, and REALLY yummy. Take Greek yogurt, add some vanilla flavoring or fruit, a touch of sugar if you want, and freeze in the ice cream maker. YUMMY healthy treat!

Today we decided

to name Grace Kelly ...Grace Kelly!  We played wii fit for a while, and it was fun!  I did this balance test that I was the CHAMPION Of!  I was able to sit still and not move for 3 minutes!  My mom is really bad at Ski jumping.  We ate really  well, too- we had chinese food, and it was pretty easy to order healthy foods from there. It was a good day.
